    Orbost with a population of some 3,000, is situated in the geographic centre of the East Gippsland Shire, one of the largest shires in Victoria. It is a very diverse area with a strong primary production industry centred on the Snowy River alluvial flats, reputed to be amongst the most fertile in the world. Victoria's most productive forest area makes it the timber production centre of the state.     The "Snowy River Mail" circulates from Lakes Entrance, throughout the famous Snowy River district of Orbost, Cann River, Mallacoota, Genoa, Bemm River, Errinundra and north to Bonang and Border districts. It is the official newspaper of the East Gippsland Shire and is the only newspaper published in far eastern Victoria. The primary circulation area includes Bairnsdale, Bemm River, Bruthen, Buchan, Cann River, Genoa, Lakes Entrance, Maffra, Mallacoota, Marlo, Newmeralla, Nowa Nowa, Orbost and Traralgon.
